Research in Architectural Engineering
The College of Engineering & Science Architectural Engineering students take part in hands-on research. They work on projects that
- connect design,
 - community,
 - and innovation.

A few research examples:
Community Service-Based Research
Dr. Alan Hoback’s research tackles real-world challenges such as homelessness, city planning, energy use, architecture, transit and learnship curriculum. Students apply engineering skills to improve lives and help strengthen communities.
Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC)
The Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC) is a nonprofit architecture and urban design firm at the University. It works with local communities to create sustainable well-designed spaces. Students gain hands-on experience and participate in projects that leave a visible mark on Detroit and the surrounding area.
Our earthquake research focuses on designing safe, resilient buildings that can survive seismic forces. Many communities lack the resources or knowledge to build earthquake-resistant structures. Our work develops practical and affordable solutions that can save lives.
