Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics (MATM)

The Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics (MATM) program is designed to improve and augment the mathematical skills of high school and middle school mathematics teachers. Students are introduced to modern instruction methods that rely on state-of-the-art instructional technology.

In particular the use of information technology to support and enhance the teaching of mathematics is emphasized. Graduates will be prepared as teacher leaders to improve the teaching of mathematics at schools. The MATM degree is offered in two tracks: Elementary and Secondary.

Admission Requirements

This degree is designed for students who have an interest in teaching K-12 mathematics or computer science.

Students must either have a teaching certificate or be in the process of earning one, having satisfied the entrance requirements for enrollment in a certification program in the College of Education and Human Services. In particular, a passing score on the Michigan Basic Skills Test is required.

Students must also have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA 3.0, having attained mastery of college mathematics up to and including a year of Calculus, listed as MTH 141 and MTH 142 in the U.D.M. undergraduate catalog.

Students not meeting all requirements may be admitted provisionally, in which case they are expected to make up their deficiencies while under supervision of their advisor prior to beginning graduate work. Courses taken to satisfy admission requirements may be taken for graduate credit, but do not count toward completion of the degree. Upon completion of these courses, a formal application to the program can be made to the College of Engineering and Science.

Degree Requirements

1. Three graduate courses specific to mathematical logic and science education are required: MED 560, MED 561, and MED 590.
2. Four more courses specific to content area are required.
   For the Mathematics Education track, the additional required courses are:
   MED 582, MED 583, MED 584 and MED 585.
   For the Computer Science Education track, additional required courses are:
   MED 571, MED 572, MED 573, and MED 587.
3. Two elective courses are taken, selected from the MED regimen.
4. The capstone experience of the program, completed after all other work, is the Research Project, MED 549.
   

The requirements listed above apply to students who are now entering the program. Students admitted prior to the Fall 2004 semester may have different program requirements, and are permitted to retain their older program requirements if desired.

Elementary Track

The elementary track is for those who will teach in grades Kindergarten through eight.

Secondary Track

The secondary track is for those who will teach in grades seven through twelve
