Building Changes
Dramatic Enrollment GrowthEnrollment in the sciences has risen steadily at UDM over the last five years, from 69 incoming full-time undergraduate science students in 2002 to 191 in 2007. In the past two years alone, total science enrollments at all levels have increased 50% and full‑time undergraduate science enrollments have exceeded 450 students in fall 2007. In addition, science students at UDM tend to have higher ACT scores, and higher retention and graduation rates, than the general student population. In coming years, the number of science students is projected to climb even higher, presenting both opportunities and challenges to the College’s faculty, equipment and facilities resources. In the human resource area, additional faculty positions were recently added in chemistry and biology, and searches are under way for several new faculty members. Chemistry and biochemistry play critical roles in such important areas as the discoveryof alternative fuel sources that will cut our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, and serve as the basis for environmental solutions to reduce waste and pollution.
