Magna-UDM Mexican Scholars Program
Magna Program Information
Professional Training/Experiences at MPT

Magna-UDM Mexican Scholars Program is designed to educate and develop exceptional graduate engineers as future technical leaders of Magna Powertrain’s global engineering/ manufacturing centers in Mexico. This offer is contingent upon students making a two-year commitment to work at Magna operations in Mexico. These engineers will complete their master’s degrees in engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy and one full year of paid internship assignments at Magna’s engineering center in Troy, MI. They will then return to Mexico to assume key engineering responsibilities in Magna Powertrain.
Support
In addition to the salary paid for technical assignments at MPT, a generous scholarship will be provided to support 75% of the tuition for the master’s program. The combined value of the internship income and the scholarship will exceed $70,000. Students will need to provide 25% of the tuition and pay for their travel and living expenses during the program.
Schedule
This program begins with two semesters of graduate studies in engineering at UDM. During their third semester, students in good academic standing will proceed to a paid co-op at MPT in Michigan. After a satisfactory work assignment, students will continue for their fi nal term. Upon successful completion of their Master program, students will return to MPT for additional training for 8 to 12 months. After the training period, the engineers would return to Mexico to work at an MPT Engineering/Production center. A minimum two year commitment is required.
Academic Program at UDM
- The Mexican Scholars will study in either the Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) Program or Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering (ME) Program.
- Students will take the Six Sigma Quality Courses as part of their studies; this and their completion of a Six Sigma project will allow them to seek the highly desirable Six Sigma Black Belt Certifi cation.
- Enrollment in one or two courses from the Advanced Electric Vehicles (AEV) Program is encouraged.
- Mechanical Engineering students are encouraged to focus other courses on areas of mechanics, such as rotating machinery, fatigue and NVH.
- EE and ME students are encouraged to focus other courses on the area of controls.
- Students require 30 credits (with thesis) or 33 credits (non-thesis) to graduate with a master’s degree. With a full-time load of 9 credits per term, they will complete 27 credits in three full terms of study. To complete the rest of the credits, one of the following options is required:
- Non-thesis Option: Take four courses in one of the three terms and during the co-op term take one course and begin the capstone project in an area related to your work at MPT.
- Thesis Option: Start a thesis during the co-op term and register for three credits of thesis during that term. (This option is the more desirable one and would allow the student to link his/her thesis work to a problem of value/ interest to MPT and to their co-op assignment.)
