Mechanical Engineering

UDM's ME graduates "hit the ground running." They are productive engineers from the day they graduate. Not only are theoretical concepts covered in detail, but applications to real-life engineering problems are woven throughout the curriculum. Every engineering student graduates with one full year of "real world" engineering experience. The combination of solid education and co-op experience helps to explain why UDM engineers are in high demand.

Extensive laboratory experiences provide plenty of hands-on opportunities. Our laboratories are fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, like the data acquisition software Labview for Windows and a Laser Doppler Velocimeter for measurement of fluid velocities. The Automotive Lab contains several dynamometers plus other equipment to measure engine performance.

Why should you consider UDM for your Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree?

Current UDM undergrads may be eligible for our 5 year Bachelor's/Master's Program.

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives

  1. To produce engineers who understand the performance of engineered products and systems in terms of the relevant fundamental principles of math, science and the humanities, whether they are practicing engineers or students in graduate engineering programs.
  2. To produce engineers who excel in the professional practice of mechanical engineering. Professional practice includes the ability to identify, design and implement solutions to technical problems through a multiplicity of laboratory, analytical and communication methods within a business climate.
  3. To produce engineers who are aware of how their roles as technical professionals and leaders affect the wider human community, and who are motivated by moral principles in their professional and personal lives.

Manufacturing Engineering

The State of Michigan is a world leader in many high-tech manufacturing areas which has made it very attractive to industrial firms who are in search of well qualified manufacturing engineers. We continually hear from representatives of our major industry partners that they are looking for well-rounded manufacturing engineers with the solid knowledge/skills and hands-on experience necessary for analyzing and solving problems in manufacturing and related technologies.
The University of Detroit Mercy is strategically positioned to provide and expand the best education for all of its manufacturing engineering students. Therefore, we have tailored this program to address the critical shortage of manufacturing engineering professionals in the region and throughout the U.S. Our challenge is to attract talented students into the manufacturing engineering program and utilize the latest educational tools to equip them to excel in their profession.
