The existing intersection at the Michigan highway 53 and 26-Mile Road needs to be rebuilt.

The traffic on 26 Mile Road is getting congested at the traffic lights.

Also the 26-Mile Bridge is too low for truck traffic to pass under it on M-53.

Therefore the entire intersection is planned to be rebuilt.

The design that was chosen for the intersection was a roundabout for both the East and West side.  Two-lane roundabouts were chosen because they have more capacity to get cars through.

Additionally, roundabouts were cheaper than some other options, and are much safer.  Roundabouts don't have the head-on collisions found in other types of intersections.

An added advantage is that the roundabouts used less space than the other intersections, so the traffic could be pulled away from the housing.
