The Michigan Transmission Company Headquarters is to be constructed along the south side of Twelve Mile Road just east of the M-5 exit ramp in Novi, Michigan.  The site is approximately 86 acres in size with a large portion being wetlands.  The project will consist of a six-storey office, two-story control center, and a two-story parking structure.

The site consists mainly of wetlands located to the west and north sides of the proposed buildings.  Much of the soil in the area is peat which is very poor for supporting structures.  The road around the wetlands and the surface parking may have large deflections and settlement.

Our recommendation for removing the peat soils is to using a rolling surcharge.  A 35 foot high sand pile will be placed on top of the poor soils.  The peat will be squeezed out the sides and hauled away.

Under the proposed locations of the building, the soil there was very good.  Even though the office building was very large, shallow foundations such as spread footings could be used.

Pavements were constructed near the wetlands.  The roads go along areas where the ground level is higher than the wetland.  However, when heavy loads from trucks are on the road the soil might fail by sliding into the wetland.  Therefore, retaining walls were required. wall
