College of Engineering and Science

Would you enjoy Architecture or CE more?

civil and environmental engineeringHistorically, Architecture and Structural Civil Engineering were the same field. In fact, at UDM Architecture used to be housed in Engineering. The graduates of the two programs work together at the same offices after graduation. Structures is a focal area within Civil Engineering that focuses on buildings and bridges. It is also a focal area of architecture, although both fields have evolved beyond just creating buildings.

Both fields create design of buildings, but they focus on different aspects. Architects focus on comfort, and aesthetics. Engineers focus on how to construct the structures. Both focus on economics and usefulness, but in different ways.

A general rule for someone who is unsure of which program they would like the most is to think about whether in high school you were more interested in art (architecture) or math and science (engineering). However, what if you like both art and science? UDM has a dual degree Master of Architectural Engineering program where someone interested both can get both. Your classes in this program will engage both architecture and engineering subjects. It provides excitement in the classroom when we all work on design teams together.
