Engineering Concepts
Engineers need to have many skills to be able to design the many phases of a development. Here are some classes that help you get ready for working.
| |
Chemistry This gives you the background that you need to understand the advanced environmental and material science courses. |
|
Math All engineering uses some math. You need to have a few course in math in order to do the calculations. |
| Computer Aided Drafting Drafting is necessary so you can put your drawings on paper. Drawings are needed so your design is very clear. |
Introduction to Design This course introduces you to different types of engineering. This shows you the basics of making engineering designs. |
||
| Fluids This course introduces water flow concepts. Most civil engineering designs deal with flowing water. For examples, floods or pipes. |
Surveying Surveying is the process of making maps of the land. This is needed so that you know how to fit a project into what is already there. |
||
| Construction Materials Engineers use building materials such as steel, concrete, and asphalt. You need to understand how to get a long life out of them. |
Plan Reading An important skill is to be able to read the design plans. Inspection is comparing plans to the project as-built. |
||
| Structures Examples of structures are buildings and bridges. This course covers how to design these structures to be strong enough. |
Hydraulics Hydraulics is water flow through pipes. You need to understand this in order to design water main systems and sewers. |
||
| Hydrology Hydrology is flow of water over land and into lakes and streams. You need to know this to do grading and detention ponds. |
Contracts You need to be able to communicate effectively with other engineers and the public. An optional law course will show you contracts. |
||
| Environment The water course focuses on cleaning of drinking water and cleaning it up when we are done to limit environmental impact. |
Senior Project The senior project lets you bring together the concepts from all of your courses to work on one complete site planning design. |
