Environmental engineering student, Sarah Mauser, receives the University Innovation Fellow by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter).

Mauser, a sophomore, is the first-ever Fellow at UDM to receive this recognition.

The University Innovation Fellows program empowers students to become agents of change at their schools.

Fellows work to ensure that their peers gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to compete in the economy of the future and make a positive impact on the world.

“I’m very excited to be a part of this,” says Mauser.  “It is an honor to be a Fellow and for me to be an agent of change at UDM.”

As part of her application, Mauser created four YouTube videos on the topics:  Need to knowPassionate problemRedesigning education and Opposing forces.

Fellows advocate for lasting institutional change and create opportunities for students to engage with innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking and creativity at their schools.

They design innovation spaces, start entrepreneurship organizations, host experiential learning events and work with faculty to develop new courses.

Mauser is no stranger to innovation.

During the 2015 Research Symposium, Mauser presented “The Humble Staple Remover : A Redesign and a Business Model.”  Additionally, her ePortfolio hosted by Seelio highlights her course projects and photography interest.

“I am a young civil engineer looking to make a difference in today’s industry by utilizing my innovation and problem solving skills,” says Mauser.  “I want, more than anything, to make a difference through the work I produce.”

Mauser plans to attend the Annual Meet-up of Fellows at Stanford University along with a tour of Google in March.

The Fellows program is run by Epicenter, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and directed by Stanford University and VentureWell.
