By diversifying her co-op experiences, Julie Roberts ’15 stood above the crowd in landing a staff engineer position with Gewalt-Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) in Chicago.

Roberts, a civil engineer, recently completed her third co-op experience.  She credits her success to the different experiences she pursued.  “The training and skills I’ve developed as an intern at GHA serve as a great platform to start my transition into the full-time staff engineer position,” says Roberts.

Her position as a staff engineer is within the transportation division of GHA.  “I expect there will be overlap with other divisions,” says Roberts.  “I will be responsible for performing computer drafting on roadway, utility, and municipal engineering projects.  I will also be assisting with construction observation, preparing design computations, organizing existing condition surveys, and performing various environmental inspections.

GHA and the College of Engineering & Science have a close connection.  One of the founding partners of GHA, Bob Hamilton ’72, is a graduate of the College in civil engineering.   “We are very thankful to all of our co-op employers,” says Dean Gary Kuleck of the College of Engineering & Science.  “It is even better when an alumnus serves as a mentor to our rising stars.”  Hamilton serves on Dean's Advisory Board, a special group of alumni and friends who lend their skills and expertise to the Dean.

Roberts offers these words of wisdom in selecting co-op opportunities.  “Don't be afraid to diversify your co-op experience.  Seek experiences with different sized companies, those offering different services, and even those in different cities.  That way when it comes to graduation you'll be able to confidently pursue a job with a company you know is a good fit for you.
