Updating The Chemistry Building For a New Educational ModelNew educational models with an emphasis on rigorous group projects, intensive student research and ubiquitous computing-call for new teaching/ learning environments. The 80-year-old Chemistry building has great potential for providing those environments. ![]() ![]() Proposed main entrance The hallway as it currently exists and hallway for the renovated It is in need of significant renovations to create a safer, more comfortable environment along with redefined and renovated spaces to support new methods of interactive, hands-on and digitally-supported learning. The planned renovations will encompass: • Reorganizing the building to support the exchange of ideas and information between students and faculty and among project groups, orally, graphically and digitally.• Providing presentation and display systems built upon the latest digital
technologies, emulating those used at professional conferences and in professional workplaces, allowing ongoing dissemination of results and recognition of achievement.
• Creating a more energy-efficient exterior and upgrading the infrastructure(plumbing, heating and cooling, the ventilation system, and electrical system)needed for comfortable, efficient occupancy by larger numbers of students and faculty members. • Renovating ceilings, walls and floors—transforming the interior into a modern, inviting building, which will help strengthen the recruitment and retention of topnotch faculty and students.Next Page
