College of Engineering and Science

Pre-College Programs

The College of Engineering and Science at the University of Detroit Mercy has a long history of serving students from the metro Detroit area in its pre-college programs. Our oldest program started twenty-eight years ago through a partnership with the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP).

In the 2006-07 academic year, the College offered ten different pre-college programs covering students in the 4th through 12th grades. These programs affected over 3,700 students who attended events, camps, and programs on campus. Our extensive outreach programs have allowed us to build strong relationships with many of the high schools in the area.

Saturday DAPCEP Programs at UDM
Five week Saturday enrichment classes in the fall and spring for students in the 4th through 12th grades focusing on engineering, math, computers and science.

JETS-DAPCEP UNITE Program
A four week non-residential summer experience in which students take five classes per day, taught by university professors, and can earn colllege credit.

STEPS Summer Camp
One week residential summer camp for girls in the 9th-11th grades. The focus of our camp is engineering, manufacturing, science and robotics.

TRANSIT
A one-week commuter summer program for high school students exploring the world of transportation

STEPS into HIGH SCHOOL
A version of the STEPS summer camp which takes place during the school year.  High school teachers and their students explore robotics with the VEX system.

Ford PAS
The Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) provides high school students with high-quality interdisciplinary learning experiences that challenge them academically and develop their problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Technology Discovery Day (TDD)
Fall on-campus event for area high school teachers and students. Engineering and science displays and science-based competitions are among the highlights.

Michigan FIRST LEGO League (FLL)
FLL is a national program (through a partnership between FIRST and LEGO) for students age 9-14 which excites kids about engineering and science through robotics. UDM and General Motors Milford Proving Ground have been partners since 1999 in sponsoring and directing the FLL effort in the state of Michigan.

FIRST ROBOTICS
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a national organization whose mission is to excite high school students about engineering and technology through its national robotics competition. Since 1997, UDM College of Engineering & Science has sponsored and mentored a FIRST team. In 2006, we reunited with our first FIRST team at University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Detroit.
