Faculty and students present at regional meeting of ACS

Detroit Mercy was well-represented at the the 48th Central Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Dearborn on June 6 to 9.

Several faculty members made oral presentations on their research:

  • Dr. Jonathan Stevens on Fuel Cells (Fuel cell membrane polymer degradation mechanisms by density functional theory)
  • Dr. Mark Benvenuto on technology forecasting (Technology forecasting: Can you really believe that stuff?)
  • Dr. Klaus Friedrick in organic chemistry (Amino acid-derived chelants for radionuclide decorporation)

Students in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department along with their faculty advisors presented the following posters:

Analysis of mineral cosmetics with a handheld X-ray fluorescence analyzer, Sara Thomas, Tiffany Tieu Ngo, Dr. Mark A. Benvenuto, Dr. Elizabeth Roberts-Kirchhoff.

Synthesis of a series of long-chain aliphatic ligands for complexation and water remediation Justin Pothoof, Grace Nguyen, Michele Bhagwagar, Sara Makki, Dr. Mark A. Benvenuto.

Production of a new series of ligands with potential to act as water remediators Justin Pothoof, Christopher Niedek, Dr. Mark A. Benvenuto along with their high school research team from Grosse Pointe North High School.

Investigating atrazine accumulation and histological changes in the hepatopancreas of crayfish post-exposure Victoria C. Torres, Kathrine Yacoo, Noor K. Abraham, Kaldoun M. Barawi, Ila Sayed and Dr. Rachelle M. Belanger, Dr. Kendra R. Evans and Dr. Elizabeth Roberts-Kirchhoff along with ReBUILDetroit scholar, Daniel J. Dayfield, from Marygrove College.
