College of Engineering & Science faculty presented their findings on first-year, course based chemistry research experience at the American Chemical Society national conference in San Francisco earlier this month.

Dr. Kendra Evans associate professor of Chemistry presented “First-year, course based chemistry research experience: Development and implementation of a research methods course for chemistry and biochemistry majors” while Dr. Katherine Lanigan associate professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry presented, “First-year, course based chemistry research experience: Development and implementation of a research methods course for chemistry and biochemistry students as part of a research coordination network.”

The first-year, course based research experiences have been incorporated into the ReBUILDetroit program which provides undergraduate students an accelerated pathway into exciting and in-demand career paths in biomedical disciplines.

In addition to these chemistry and biochemistry faculty presentations, Dr. Alexa Rihana and her student Zhe Li presented, “Analysis of heavy metals in water using cloud point extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry.”
