M-1 Rail streetcar rolls by Detroit Mercy

September 14, 2016

Detroit’s first streetcar in nearly 60 years passed by McNichols and Livernois as it was delivered from the factory during the early evening of September 13.

The College of Engineering & Science has been a pioneer in developing transit in Detroit.

Dr. Leo Hanifin, Dean Emeritus of the College, worked with students to draft a preliminary plan for mass transit along the Woodward corridor in 2007.

Hanifin is a board member of the M-1 Rail project.

Earlier this year, Hanifin and several other board members toured the Pennsylvania factory building Detroit’s new streetcars.  (See UDM involved in M-1 Rail)

The M-1 Rail is expected operational in 2017.
