STEPS Camp begins with oodles of fun

July 11, 2016

Twenty high school girls from metropolitan Detroit are spending their summer vacation in an intense two-week summer camp learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Science Technology Engineering Preview Summer Camp for Girls (STEPS) is a unique, fun filled opportunity camp introducing girls to the exciting world of engineering, science, and robotics.

Participants receive hands-on experiments with robots, computer-aided design (CAD) programing, sensors and chemistry and physics experiments.

The students first challenge – design a tower structure consisting of spaghetti noodles and marshmallows.

After a five-minute brainstorming design process, the teams of two or three girls had 10-minutes to construct their tower without talking.

The winning structure stood 16 inches tall.

The camp continues through July 22.
