Passion for research began as a freshman, now published author

June 24, 2016

Congratulations to Salette Martinez ’09 Chemistry on the publication of her article, Catalytic Mechanisms of Fe(II)- and 2-Oxoglutarate-Dependent Oxygenases in The Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Salette MartinezMartinez is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Michigan State University.  Her passion for chemistry and research was realized during her freshman year at Detroit Mercy when she held a research lab position.

“From then on, I was engaged in research every semester and summer at UDM,” said Martinez.  “Being involved in undergraduate research gave me much-needed, hands-on laboratory experience.”

Detroit Mercy’s low faculty to student ratio allows students like Martinez to get to know their professors.

“The amount of support I received from my academic advisor was invaluable in helping me enroll in my Ph.D. program,” said Martinez.  “Without a doubt, I benefited greatly from the outstanding academics taught at UDM, the small class sizes and the outstanding faculty.”

Martinez was also a first-generation and immigrant college student.

Congratulations, Dr. Martinez!
