Chili Cook-off trophy back home in E&S

April 29, 2016

The trophy for the winning chili served at the Homecoming Tailgate & Alumni Chili Cook-off is back home in the College of Engineering & Science.

Chili Cook-off trophyAndy Wakeland civil engineering ’07 served up this year’s winning dish between the men’s and women’s basketball games earlier this year.

This was the second year that Wakeland served up his chili for the annual event.

“Last year, I ran out of chili early and wasn’t in contention,” says Wakeland.  “This year I borrowed the biggest pot I could find.  I didn’t want a repeat of last year.”

The Alumni Chili Cook-off is an annual event featuring alumni cooks from each of UDM’s colleges and the Titan Club held in the Fitness Center.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni cast votes for their favorite chili and the winner was announced at halftime during the game.

The trophy was last displayed in the Dean’s Office in 2007 when then Dean Hanifin won the honor.

So what’s the winning recipe?

“The secret was the mixing of two different chili recipes into one,” says Wakeland.  “E&S alumnus, David Root [civil engineering ‘10] and I made our own chili recipes and then combined them.”

According to Wakeland, taster’s feedback was unanimous.  “This was the best chili!”
