UDM freshman raises environmental issues as Miss Michigan Earth

April 21, 2016

During the day, Jasmina Cunmulaj, a freshman in Pre-Med/Psychology and a ReBUILDetroit scholar, is like most of her classmates.  She attends classes, studies and has limited time for friends and family.

Cunmulaj also carries the title of Miss Michigan Earth 2016.  She was crowned Miss Earth Michigan earlier this year.

“I want to use my voice to promote environmental awareness with my crown,” says Cunmulaj.  “The Flint water crisis is one issue that I want to address.”

The Miss Earth competition is in its sixteenth year and in the top three of international pageants.

The winner of Miss Earth serves as the ambassador to environmental protection campaigns worldwide.

Cunmulaj is no stranger to the stage.  While in high school in Novi, she was crowned Miss Novi in 2015.

“Being Miss Michigan Earth provides me the opportunity to make change happen,” says Cunmulaj.  “Whether it is the water crisis in Flint or Detroit, or working with homeless shelters, or volunteering with children in Grand Rapids, I want to help people in need.”

On Earth Day, April 22, Cunmulaj will take part in Rochester’s Earth Day celebration and speaking on the Flint water crisis on Saturday at 6 pm.

Cunmulaj will be competing on the national stage for Miss Earth United States in Washington, D.C. this summer.
