“There are many activities during the conference,” says Dr. James Lynch, professor of civil engineering and faculty advisor.  “Our team is participating in the product display, judging and presentations on Friday. “

The main racing events take place on Hawk Island Park, 1601 E. Cavanaugh Road in Lansing from 8:30 am to 6 pm on Saturday.

“Our team has more than 250 hours invested in this canoe,” says Brian O’Hara, a sophomore civil engineer.  “We are all new to this.  No one on the team has built or raced a concrete canoe.”

This regional contest is part of the National Concrete Canoe Competition, which provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with team and project management skills.

Winning teams will move on to national competitions.

This year’s concrete canoe teams are from:

  • Lawrence Technological University
  • Michigan State University
  • Michigan Technological University
  • Ohio Northern University
  • University of Detroit Mercy
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Toledo
  • Western Michigan University
