Grant provides immediate feedback and greater instructor access

March 01, 2016

Dr. Richard Hill, Mechanical Engineering professor, receives an approximately $20,000 grant to facilitate student self-learning.

Dr. Richard HillThe project, “Updates and Enhancements to the Controls Tutorials for MATLAB and Simulink,” from The MathWorks, Inc. is to develop a set of curricular materials to facilitate self-learning in the System Dynamics and Controls Curriculum.

“As part of the grant, assignments will be created that can be evaluated automatically by program checking software so that students are able to receive immediate feedback,” says Hill.  “This will allow students to learn at their own pace, while allowing the instructor to use class time more effectively for teaching.”

While some textbooks provide some supplemental materials, this goes beyond that model.

“Students will have the added benefit of building and learning about algorithms which is an essential skill for engineers,” says Hill.

Students enrolled in the courses, Control Systems (ENGR 4220) and Controls II (ELEE 5700), are scheduled to utilize this technology.

The implementation and deployment of the materials will be facilitated through the popular web-based Controls Tutorials for MATLAB and Simulink at: website
