Focus on the goal, prepare for an opportunity, says alumnus

February 03, 2016

College of Engineering & Science alumnus and Chief Engineer Diesel Engine Engineering Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Dr. Luis Cattani, celebrates his team’s top diesel engine designation in the “2016 Ward’s 10 Best Engines” (the Oscar’s of the Engine Community).

Luis CattaniCattani earned his masters in mechanical engineering ’89 and doctorate in ’93 whose present portfolio oversees diesel engines into RAM, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles worldwide.

“Never give up and continue to prepare yourself for the future,” says Cattani.  “Keep your focus and prepare for an opportunity.”

Cattani’s UDM education prepared him well for his career.

“UDM is a small tightknit community,” says Cattani.  “You learn to be resourceful while observing high environmental and engineering ethical standards.”

As chief engineer in the diesel engine division, Cattani’s responsibility spans the entire product development lifecycle from concept to launch.

Cattani spent 15 years as an adjunct professor at UDM teaching mechanical engineering to non-traditional students.

“Teaching non-traditional students was is very rewarding,” says Cattani.  “They had high academic standards,  they really wanted to learn and they asked for my advice to solve engineering problems that they faced at work.”
