Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics (MATM)
The Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics (MATM) degree is designed for graduate students interested in teaching mathematics or computer science at the K-12 level. The program is intended to strengthen students’ mathematical content knowledge and provide a rigorous exposure to research in mathematics education, including the use of technology in education. Students can choose from two concentrations: Mathematics Education or Computer Science Education.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must satisfy each of the following requirements:
- current teaching certificate or be enrolled in a certification program,
- passing score on the Michigan Basic Skills Test
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 gpa, and
- mastery of college mathematics up to and including two semesters of calculus (equivalent to MTH 141 and MTH 142 in the UDM undergraduate catalog.)
Degree Requirements
The program requires 30 credits of planned study in one of two concentration areas, Mathematics Education or Computer Science Education.
- Students in either concentration must take three courses in mathematics pedagogy and mathematical logic.
MED 560 Psychology of Mathematics
MED 561 Instructional Technologies in Math. Ed.
MED 590 Logic and Mathematical Inquiry
- Students will then take four more courses specific to their chosen concentration.
Mathematics Education Concentration
MED 582 Linear Algebra for Teachers
MED 583 Geometry I
MED 584 History of Mathematics
MED 585 Elementary Statistics
Computer Science Education Concentration
MED 571 Computer Science for Teachers I
MED 572 Computer Science for Teachers II
MED 573 Computer Science for Teachers III
MED 587 Finite Mathematics
- Students will choose two elective courses, selected from the MED course list.
- After completing the above requirements, students will complete a research project in the capstone course
MED 549.
