5:30 – 7 p.m. Symposium
Detroit's electrical utility infrastructure faces daunting challenges and opportunities. An aging infrastructure struggles to serve a population that has not only shrunk but is redistributing. As parts of Detroit start to look more like rural Michigan, some are even considering going “off the grid” for many utilities. Destitute customers struggle to pay their utilities bills. Homegrown pirating connections steal electricity at great risk.
Three Detroit leaders, with different backgrounds and perspectives, will provide and exchange their views on ELECTRIC DETROIT as it exists today and may exist in the future.
Keynote Speaker: Steven Kurmas, chief operating officer, DTE Energy.
Kurmas, highly respected engineer and business leader, is responsible for all of DTE Energy's operations, making decisions that assure that DTE's service is safe, efficient, ethical and fiscally sound. Past President of the Engineering Society of Detroit, Kurmas has long provided a strong voice for a vibrant Detroit.
Ethics Perspective: Gerald Cavanagh, S.J., D.B.A., Charles T. Fisher Professor of Business Ethics, University of Detroit Mercy
Cavanagh is a world-renowned scholar of business ethics and author of the widely used textbook on the topic: American Business Values: A Global Perspective.
