Biology Department

The Biology Department is proud of its student-centered approach to education. All of the classes, including laboratories, are taught by full-time, doctorally-prepared instructors. Classes are small and there is plenty of opportunity to get help with your experiments.

The Department generally has between 150 and 200 majors at a time, most of whom plan to continue their education in graduate school or professional school.

Each major is assigned a faculty member who assists the student in choosing the course work that will best prepare him or her for his/her chosen career. Your major advisor can also help in finding you summer internships or in finding volunteer work in a health care facility if that is desirable for your chosen career.

If you change your mind about your career or even about biology as your major, your advisor is there to help you switch to another discipline or another college within the University if you feel that that best suits your needs. In short, there is always someone to help with whatever you need.

Our students are competitive in admissions to graduate school and medical school. Many pre-dental and pre-PA students choose to come to the University of Detroit Mercy as undergraduates because the University has both a dental school and a master's degree program in Physician Assistant, and they wish to continue their education here. Other subdisciplines within the biology major include: pre-law, business certification, and criminal justice.

Our student's acceptance rate into medical school is approximately 80% and the acceptance rate to dental school is slightly higher. Our acceptance rate for physician assistant and other health oriented careers is also excellent.
